16 Lovers Lane was the sixth album by Australian indie rock group The Go-Betweens, released in 1988 by Beggars Banquet Records. Prior to the recording of the album, longtime bassist Robert Vickers left the band when the other group members decided to return to Australia after having spent several years in London, England; he was replaced by John Willsteed. The album was recorded at Studios 301 in Sydney, between Christmas 1987 and Autumn 1988.
In fact, it could have easily been on Bob’s 1976 album "Desire". The only difference is that the Go-Betweens did not record this track in a hurry. In addition, to these ears at least, Grant McLennan is a considerably better singer than Dylan. The Go-Between’s performance on this track is tight, flawless and filled with energy. It’s one of those songs with an incredible melody and a mood that just captures you and doesn’t let you go until the last second of the fadeout has become inaudible. They put on an amazing show and yes, they played Was There Anything I Could Do? The curious thing is that I didn’t really know who they were when I walked into a concert venue called Double Door in June 1999. A friend of mine from work had an extra ticket, so I went. I didn’t know any of the songs, couldn’t sing along, but became a devoted Go-Betweens fan that night.
As the sixth song on The Go-Betweens album 16 Lovers Lane, it was the only song by them where one of the band’s members, Grant McLennan, has not shown, Robert Forster, another member, the song prior to recording. Forster notably said the following about the song: This was obviously the most commercial thing we’d ever done, and it came out around October ‘88, which caught the summer here. It was re-released in summer and it sat fantastically on Australian summer radio and then it sat well on English summer radio . 8. Was There Anything I Could Do? 9. I'm All Right. 10.
