However, at the same time Terroir Blues (named for a French word which describes the way soil and environment affects the grapes used to make wine) is the most purposefully stark album Farrar has made since Uncle Tupelo's March 16-20, 1992, with the silences carrying as much weight as the sounds.

Once again, Jay Farrar has produced an album that's as stark and dreary - and beautiful - as the Midwest in winter. 40. Farrar's introverted neofolky material is pretty forgettable.

Alt-country veteran Jay Farrar will release a new, 23-track studio album, "Terroir Blues" on June 24. Marking the debut release through his own Act/Resist imprint via Artemis, the former Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt principal's forthcoming disc will be comprised of new originals, instrumental pieces, and alternate takes recorded in late 2002 and early 2003. Since the band's demise, his former partner, Jeff Tweedy, has fluttered from rock pastiche to off-the-peg post-rock in Wilco, while Uncle Tupelo's inheritor, Ryan Adams, mixes up a baby-food version of Americana so delicious, even Elton John enjoys it. Farrar, by contrast, is incapable of being anything other than himself: darkly introspective, uncommunicative to the point of insolence.
