Nation-building is constructing or structuring a national identity using the power of the state. Nation-building aims at the unification of the people within the state so that it remains politically stable and viable in the long run. According to Harris Mylonas, "Legitimate authority in modern national states is connected to popular rule, to majorities. Nation-building is the process through which these majorities are constructed.

For our Plan B Empire State Building project we teamed up with visionary Canadian architect Michael Green and his firm MGA. According to Green, Wood is the only carbon-neutral material that we can build with that's grown by the power of the sun. We also partnered with Equilibrium Consulting, an internationally recognized leader in timber engineering. Our pre-fabricated sections are less costly to assemble once they arrive at the building site. Simple, precise connection points and lightness make for a faster onsite process.

In her essay Building the Empire State, from her book of the same title, architectural historian Carol Willis cites two reasons for the incredible pace: A team-design approach that involved the collaboration of the architects, owners, builders, and engineers in planning and problem-solving, and the organizational genius of the general contractors Starrett Brothers & Eken. Surprisingly, this design approach was rooted more in practicality and competition than aesthetics. Not even the famous exterior of the Empire State Building was intentional. New York City zoning law required that the building step back as it went up to allow some sunlight to reach the streets underneath the monstrous skyscrapers. Willis quotes contractor Paul Starrett’s autobiography: In other words, the height, the beauty of the Empire State Building, rose out of strictly practical considerations.

The Empire State Building came in on time and under budget. The Empire State Building officially opened on May 1, 1931, to a lot of fanfare. A ribbon was cut, Mayor Jimmy Walker gave a speech, and President Herbert Hoover lit up the tower with a push of a button. The Empire State Building had become the tallest building in the world and would keep that record until the completion of the World Trade Center in New York City in 1972.

The Empire State Building was designed by William F. Lamb from the architectural firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon. The bulding was influenced by previous designs for the Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and the Carew Tower in Cincinnati, Ohio. The general contractors were The Starrett Brothers and Eken, and the project was financed primarily by John J. Raskob and Pierre S. du Pont. Excavation of the site began on January 22, 1930, and construction on the building itself started symbolically on March 17-St. Patrick’s Day-per Al Smith’s influence as Empire State, Inc. president. The project involved 3,400 workers, mostly immigrants from Europe, along with hundreds of Mohawk iron workers, many from the Kahnawake reserve near Montreal.

The idea for the Empire State Building is said to have been born of a competition between Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corporation and John Jakob Raskob of General Motors, to see who could erect the taller building. Chrysler had already begun work on the famous Chrysler Building, the gleaming 1,046-foot skyscraper in midtown Manhattan. Not to be bested, Raskob assembled a group of well-known investors, including former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith. The group chose the architecture firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon Associates to design the building.
