Philippe Sarde (born 21 June 1948) is a French film composer. Considered among the most versatile and talented French film composers of his generation, Sarde has scored over two hundred films, film shorts, and television mini-series. He received an Academy Award nomination for Tess (1979), and twelve César Award nominations, winning for Barocco (1976) and The Judge and the Assassin (1976). The film is also known under the French title Le Locataire. It is the last film in Polanski's "Apartment Trilogy", following Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby. It was entered into the 1976 Cannes Film Festival. Le Cinéma de Marco Ferreri released: 2007 released: 2006. Les Sœurs fâchées released: 2004. Les égarés released: 2003.

In 2000, Sunnyside released Tess/Le Locataire (The Tenant), which combined two film soundtracks by French composer Philippe Sarde on one compact disc: Tess (1980, originally issued on MCA) and Le Locataire (The Tenant) (1976).

In Europe, Polanski continued to make films, including Tess (1979), starring Nastassja Kinski. It won France's César Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, and received three Oscars. Polanski recalls the villages and families he lived with as relatively primitive by European standards: They were really simple Catholic peasants.
