This Is Gospel: The Best of the Highway QC's. Featuring Lou Rawls and Sam Cooke among its many members, the long-running gospel vocal group the Highway QCs was one of the most popular and prolific black gospel groups of the post-war era, when gospel was increasingly taking its musical cues from rhythm and blues. The outstanding 16-track anthology THIS IS GOSPEL VOLUME 17: THE BEST OF HIGHWAY QCs showcases all of the group's best-known lineups on hits like "I Used To Wonder" and "Somewhere To Lay My Head

His first pop/soul single was "Lovable" (1956), a remake of the gospel song "Wonderful". However, it fooled no one-Cooke's unique and distinctive vocals were easily recognized. Art Rupe, head of Specialty Records, the label of the Soul Stirrers, gave his blessing for Cooke to record secular music under his real name, but he was unhappy about the type of music Cooke and producer Bumps. The album, also titled Shake, reached the number one spot for R&B albums. After Cooke's death, his widow, Barbara, married Bobby Womack
