The Four Last Songs (German: Vier letzte Lieder), Op. posth. for soprano and orchestra are – with the exception of the song "Malven" (Mallows), composed later the same year – the final completed works of Richard Strauss. They were composed in 1948 when the composer was 84. The songs are "Frühling" (Spring), "September", "Beim Schlafengehen" (When Falling Asleep) and "Im Abendrot" (At Sunset).

Having read a number of books on and by Helmut Schmidt, this book offered a social context that is both insightful and refreshing. I can only imagine how difficult it is to write yet another book about Schmidt, but the author successfully manages to have us look at this cult status personality through the lens of the common person. I was able to imagine many of the Schmidt moments described in this book.
