ButterFly is the sixteenth studio album by American singer Barbra Streisand. It was released on October 1, 1974 by Columbia Records. After releasing The Way We Were earlier in 1974, a collection predominantly consisting of previously released songs, Streisand recorded her first album of entirely new material in over three years. Recorded throughout 1974 and primarily a contemporary pop record, it also incorporates music from the reggae and R&B genres.

The first selection of songs chosen did not materialize into usable tracks: You Light Up My Life by Carole King, a weird R&B song called Funky Type Thang, On Broadway by the songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller (which was a big hit for George Benson), and Everything Must Change by Benard Ighner Benard.

In retrospect, the real power on the album was arranger Tom Scott, a reed player who had perfected a light jazz-pop style in his work on Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark earlier in the year. This sound influenced much of the pop music of the 70's, including Barbra Streisand's 1974 album "ButterFly". The first track, "Love In The Afternoon", is a ballad which has an arrangement colored by a little R&B groove. It sounds like a typical Streisand pop ballad, but we can hear the soft guitars and rambling bass common to many R&B ballads.
