With their second album Those Of the Unlight, Marduk adopted a purely black metal sound before eventually shifting gears into war metal territory. But enough of that, let’s get down to business. Marduk play raw, savage black metal that is characterized by fast tempos, bruising riffs and Joakim Gothberg’s signature scream. However, Marduk isn’t afraid of implementing a few catchy hooks, heart whelming melodies or seven minute ambient instrumentals (Echoes From the Past) into their overtly aggressive sound. Although I arrived a few years late at Marduk’s Those Of The Unlight bash, I revel in my lost time by getting acquainted with their back catalog. This is a supreme black metal record that should be heard by just about everyone that considers him/herself a BM enthusiast. Not Carnifex though, GTFO.

Those of the Unlight is the title of the second studio album by Swedish black metal band Marduk. It was released in October 1993 by Osmose Productions, and reissued in digipak format on April 4, 2006 by Regain Records, with bonus videos of three songs performed live on August 12, 1993. It is the first album the band produced in a proper black metal style, as opposed to the blackened death metal approach of their 1992 debut, Dark Endless.

But when Marduk recorded Those of the Unlight back in 1993, black metal wasn't as diverse as it would later become; therefore, the more abrasive and brutish black metallers didn't feel a need to tell you what set them apart from keyboards-loving black metallers. And the word "brutish" definitely describes Those of the Unlight, which maintains the spirit of rawness that characterized its predecessor, Dark Endless

Those of the Unlight is the second studio album by Swedish black metal band Marduk.

Those of the Unlight is the last Marduk album to feature Joakim Göthberg on drums, as he would purely assume vocal duties by the next studio album, Opus Nocturne, and the last to feature Magnus Devo Andersson on guitar until his return in 2004 (where he assumed bass duties thereon). Burn My Coffin was originally the title for a track that would appear on Mayhem’s De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, the title was changed by Per Yngve Ohlin before he died. Marduk later adopted the title for the song on this album.
