Although Hootie & the Blowfish delivered a fine second album, they had no hope of matching the phenomenal success of their debut, Cracked Rear View, so Fairweather Johnson was perceived as a flop, even though it moved over two million copies. In a way, that perception of failure was the best thing that could have happened to the band. With the spotlight being shone somewhere else (Alanis Morissette, to be exact), Hootie & the Blowfish could return to what they loved best - playing music and being in a band
Musical Chairs will not unleash anything like the chart assault that Cracked did, but it's a far more relaxed and engaging effort than Johnson. Frontman Darius Rucker, guitarist Mark Bryan, bassist Dean Felber and drummer Jim Sonefeld are not out to prove anything; they just sound as though they're having fun again. Rucker is essentially a soul singer – and a good one – which means that he bothers to hit the notes, avoids irony and isn't afraid to reach for big emotions. Fresh musical touches – horns, a string section and country-style arrangements – turn up here and there. Hootie's formula and limited range of feeling do grow repetitious over the course of thirteen songs. But, taken individually – as, say, you might hear them on the radio – each song is eminently listenable.
Folks tend to speak of populist folk-popsters Hootie & the Blowfish in surface terms. The first album, Cracked Rear View, they'll tell you, sold 15 million copies. Second disc, tsk, tsk-only a measly couple million-a real failure for this supposed supergroup. And now, for entry three, the pressure's on: Will Hootie reclaim the multi-platinum throne? But the lens is horribly out of focus here.
