An opium den was an establishment where opium was sold and smoked. Opium dens were prevalent in many parts of the world in the 19th century, most notably China, Southeast Asia, North America, and France. Throughout the West, opium dens were frequented by and associated with the Chinese, because the establishments were usually run by Chinese who supplied the opium as well as prepared it for visiting non-Chinese smokers.
The history of opium in China began with the use of opium for medicinal purposes during the 7th century. In the 17th century the practice of mixing opium with tobacco for smoking spread from Southeast Asia, creating a far greater demand. Imports of opium into China stood at 200 chests annually in 1729, when the first anti-opium edict was promulgated.
For 21 years between 1839 and 1860, the Opium Wars saw thousands of Chinese people flee to begin a new life in the US - where they soon settled in cities along the west coast like San Francisco. America's first war on drugs: Rare photos show young women and suavely dressed men in zombie state that sparked panic about the opium trade. Established by Chinese migrants, opium dens in US sprung up in San Francisco's Chinatown during 1840s.
Listen to music from Opium Den like Blackwell Road. Opium Den was a gothic rock band out of Boston active during the 90's. Their dark, ethereal sound combined elements of psychedelic and art rock with guitarist Christian Gilbert's Spanish Classical influenced style and Annette Farrington's poetic lyrics. Farrington currently writes and performs as a solo singer-songwriter.
