Booth was born on February 7, 1943 in Tampa, Florida. As a boy, Tony showed his talent by winning a contest in New Port Richey, Florida for playing guitar at age 14. After high school, Tony attended the University of New Mexico with the intent of becoming a schoolteacher. But he decided to give music a try, and began his music career with the Mel Savage Band. Before long, he was touring with Jimmy Snyder. After two singles failed to chart, Tony's cover of Jim Croce's hit Workin' At The Car Wash Blues, made it to and the album of the same name won an ASCAP award in 1974.
