Kanye West Presents Good Music Cruel Summer, commonly referred to as Cruel Summer, is a compilation album by recording artists of American record label GOOD Music, released on September 14, 2012, by the label and Def Jam Recordings. American rapper Kanye West, head of the label, first revealed plans for a label collaborative album in October 2011.

This batch of musicians, who just happen to all be from New Zealand, are clearly enthralled with the worldwide four-track indie rock explosion of the mid-'90s. Fueled by the experiments of original lo-fi poster boy Lou Barlow, whose hastily recorded skeletal acoustic songs were tagged on the tail end of albums by his old band,Dinosaur J. production quality isn't even a consideration, leaving only songcraft to carry the tunes. But homemade craftsmanship and down-under eccentricity are two things these artists have in abundance, much to the benefit of whoever does possess this disc.

Punk music came to New Zealand from 1977 onwards, with a strong DIY ethic. One of Christchurch’s first punk bands was The Doomed, featuring Richard Driver as vocalist Johnny Abort. Prominent among New Zealand punk bands were The Enemy, featuring the manic antics of Chris Knox, a central figure of New Zealand indie music since. Punk came and went quickly, and ‘New wave’ band Mi Sex had a smash with Computer Games which topped the Australian charts in 1979. Their later single People, and 80s synth-pop classic Sierra Leone by Coconut Rough can be found on the compilation Electric Dreams  . Thinking Room, her first album, debuted at No 1 on New Zealand album charts the following year. She released her second album, Stolen Hill, in 2005. She performed with Boh Runga and Hollie Smith as AnikaBoh&Hollie.
