Dead Can Dance is an Australian-British musical project formed in 1981 in Melbourne by Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry. The band relocated from Melbourne to London in May 1982. Australian music historian Ian McFarlane described Dead Can Dance's style as "constructed soundscapes of mesmerising grandeur and solemn beauty; African polyrhythms, Gaelic folk, Gregorian chant, Middle Eastern mantras, and art rock.

Dead Can Dance formed in Melbourne in 1980 - Gerrard was 16 and Perry was 19 when they started working together - and they decamped within a few years for London, where they recorded their goth-rock–inflected, self-titled debut. Dionysus was an especially different album for Dead Can Dance since it’s almost entirely Perry’s work. After he read three more books about the deity, he decided he wanted to do an impressionistic work rather than a song cycle. It’s an incredibly complex subject, he explains.

LOS ANGELES - When Lisa Gerrard sings, it seems impossible that a voice so unearthly could belong to a human being. Bourke played both on Gerrard's debut solo album, The Mirror Pool, and on the tour for Dead Can Dance's last album, Spiritchaser. After that tour, he recalled, "We both returned home to Australia, and after about six weeks off, Lisa gave me a call and said, 'I've got some ideas. Do you want to come and do some percussion work?' " From there, a passionate collaboration evolved, and Duality was born. Game," the first single culled from Duality. Recently, they were invited to perform at this summer's Lilith Fair tour, a first for Gerrard. Although she regards a wider audience as a benefit, she's become accustomed to existing outside the mainstream.
