Was mir behagt, ist nur die muntre Jagd (The lively hunt is all my heart's desire), BWV 20., BWV 208, also known as the Hunting Cantata, is a secular cantata composed by Johann Sebastian Bach for the 31st birthday of Duke Christian of Saxe-Weissenfels on 23 February 1713. A performance lasts about forty minutes. The aria "Schafe können sicher weiden" ("Sheep May Safely Graze") is the most familiar part of this cantata.

Bach's secular cantatas all have interesting music (what Bach doesn't?) and they're often wonderfully playful. Taken as a whole, I'd take BWV 202 (the Wedding Cantata) to a desert island over BWV 208 but that's taste. Was mir behagt ist nur die muntre Jagd (The cheerful hunt is all that pleases me). Secular cantata, BWV 208, for the birthday of Duke Christian of Saxe-Weißenfels (23 February), probably composed in 1713 when Bach was paid for a series of concerts in Weißenfels. It is his first "modern" cantata, including both da capo arias and recitatives.

Today's highlight is Bach's Cantata "Was mir behagt", BWV 208, known as the Hunt Cantata. The piece contains many lovely arias, in particular the famous "Sheep may safely graze", which is sung here by Emma Kirkby. 1. 0 Vivaldi Concerto O. It is Bach’s first known secular cantata, and one of the few he wrote during his Weimar period. The duke liked to imagine he was another Louis XIV, trying to emulate life at Versailles, and his birthday celebrations lasted several days. He was an enthusiastic huntsman, so the libretto, written by Salomo Franck, uses the classical legend of the goddess Diana. This aria and recitative is sung by Pales, a mythical figure of dubious gender, but here representing the goddess of crops and pastures. The duke was no doubt pleased by the praise he received: Recitative: Shall Pales be the last to offer.
