Budgie are a Welsh rock band from Cardiff. They are described by author Garry Sharpe-Young as one of the earliest heavy metal bands and a seminal influence to many acts of that scene, with fast, heavy rock (an influence on the new wave of British heavy metal (NWOBHM) and acts such as Metallica) being played as early as 1971. In late 1974, the band were joined by drummer Steve Williams for the album Bandolier, for live shows promoting this album and the follow-up, If I Were Brittania I'd Waive the Rules, the band were augmented by Welsh guitarist Myf Isaac for concert performances. Music from the 1978 LP Impeckable was featured in the 1979 film J-Men Forever (shown frequently on the USA Network's "Night Flight" television series in the 1980s) which is now a cult classic. 1982 saw them signed to RCA for Deliver Us from Evil their final recording for a "major label". This album is the first one I could call passionate. The feeling of each song seemed to be important, rather than simply throwing together some riffs and solos. Deliver Us from Evil is Budgie's tenth album, released in October 1982 on RCA Records, and according to Burke Shelley its theme "attacks the power structures of East and West and the balance of terror", in addition it also "refers to all kinds of evil, not just The Bomb and war, but the main theme calls for world peace". According to Steve Williams, "the concept of the album came about as an accident. We didn't write 'Bored With Russia'. Don (Smith) brought that over from America and that started the ball rolling

Budgie's last gasp, 1982's Deliver Us from Evil no doubt draws its title from born-again singer Burke Shelley's newfound Christian convictions; but no amount of faith can rescue this record from a complete musical shipwreck. Guitarist "Big" John Thomas displays the unenviable talent of regurgitating the most trite power chords and solos imaginable into songs like "Truth Drug" and the unbearable "Don't Cr. The band finally gets it together for closer "Hold on to Love," but by then it's too little, too late.
