This paean to how nice John Sebastian was being being treated by his girl was one of Lovin' Spoonful's poppier offerings. Sebastian recalled to Uncut magazine: "We started off in a world of 45 singles, so our only game still was three minutes of heaven every time out. That was all. We thought of it as four man Phil Spector music. We wanted it to have that big quality, but we didn't want to hire the Wrecking Crew. Our producer Eric Jacobsen understood something about this funny hybrid that we were working on," he continued

It was covered in 1966 by The Grass Roots on their first album Where Were You When I Needed You.

There was a lot of pop in the Lovin' Spoonful's early folk-rock, and "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice" was one of their poppier offerings, particularly in the almost Spectoresque bells heard on the opening instrumental intro and chorus. A folky element was still present in singer-composer John Sebastian's autoharp and the filigree folk-country-rock background guitar riffs. How high the pop quotient was is neither here nor there - it was a very pleasant, fine song, though not quite up there with "Do You Believe in Magic" or "Summer in the City.
