Marc Bolan (born Mark Feld, July 30, 1947, London; died September 16, 1977), was a leading 'Mod' and occasional male model in the early 1960s. He changed his name to Marc Bolan for his first single, "The Wizard," in 1965, before becoming a member of John's Children, a group with claims to being the first-ever 'glam rock' band. Then, in late 1970, Bolan and Finn had a suprise number two single with "Ride A White Swan.

Universal Music will issue Marc Bolan at the BBC, a new six-CD box set of BBC recordings, on 26 August 2013. The box contains 16 previously unreleased Tyrannosaurus Rex tracks, and over 20 . ex tracks never before issued. The 117 track box set kicks off with some June 1968 John’s Children recordings and the curtain closes at the end of disc six with a couple of . ex tracks broadcast on the David Hamilton show, less than a month before Bolan’s untimely death. The box presentation echoes the Kinks at the BBC box set, which its retro Radio Times (BBC TV and Radio listing mag) design.

When Marc Bolan entered the world of rock & roll after a brief stint as a teenage model, his path was winding and full of sharp turns. Almost every step of the way, the British Broadcasting Corporation was in full support of Bolan's remarkable evolution, and Marc Bolan at the BBC is an exhaustive collection of archived performances from various showcases and concert broadcasts during his endlessly productive years of 1967-1977.

In 1997, a memorial stone and bust of Bolan, Marc Bolan's Rock Shrine, was unveiled at the site where he died in Barnes, London. Bolan’s appearance on the BBC's music show Top of the Pops in March 1971, wearing glitter and satins, is often cited as the beginning of the glam rock movement. Music critic Ken Barnes called Bolan "the man who started it all".
