A true early-'70s pop/rock classic, "Delta Lady" is probably more well known than Joe Cocker's hit version, as well as his remarkable, extended version on the Mad Dogs & Englishmen album. However, Leon Russell's own excellent version is a great blueprint, combining rock, soul, and a strong gospel energy.

Carney is Leon Russell's third solo studio album, released in 1972. It peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 200 and was the first for Russell to contain a hit single - "Tight Rope" b/w "This Masquerade" - which reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He recorded 33 albums and at least 430 songs. He wrote "Delta Lady", recorded by Joe Cocker, and organized and performed with Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour in 1970. His "A Song for You", added to the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2018, has been recorded by more than 200 artists, and his "This Masquerade" by more than 7. s a pianist, he played in his early years on albums by The Beach Boys, Dick Dale and Jan and Dean. The claim that the songs on the CD are "extra-long versions" is a bit misleading and the length of the songs shown on the back insert are incorrect. For example, Delta Lady is 4:20 minutes long, not 5:00 as shown. Beware of Darkness is 4:56 instead of the 5:40 as shown. When I put the CD into my computer, the information embedded (or encoded) on the disc brought up the image and song list of the DVD audio disc of Leon's first solo album (see https://www.discogs.com/Leon-Russell-Leon-Russell/release/8990248) and not the image and song list for Delta Lady. There was apparently an error in the encoding of the disc when it was manufactured. Comparing the songs on this CD with the originally released versions for song length found minor differences in most cases. Certainly not extended versions one might expect from the "extra-long versions" claim made on the insert. There are some differences in the takes used for some (but not all) of these songs (added background vocals, different instrumentation, etc.) that a Leon Russell completest would enjoy. Caveat emptor.
