Find the latest tracks, albums, and images from John Lee Hooker With The Groundhogs. On the album Hooker & The Hogs, McPhee and the Groundhogs' most important musical legacy, this 1996 reissue of Hooker & The Hogs has an unusual history. Tony McPhee and the Groundhogs first played with John Lee Hooker in June of 1964, when John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers were unable to fulfill a commitment to back Hooker on the final week of his British tour.

The ominous, surging "Little Dreamer" is worth the price of admission all by itself.

As attested to by these digitally re-mastered mono recordings, Hooker and his young acolytes really hit it off, with the Detroit bluesman's alchemical mix of rhythmic urgency and unyielding anguish of tone over the respectful, bare-bones 'Hogs on "I Cover the Waterfront," "Little Dreamer," and nine more. Note: Four haphazardly recorded "bonus tracks" feature Hooker, solo or with unidentified sidemen. Tracks 12-15 feature Hooker and "unidentified" guests. Each track features Hooker's trademark electric boogie in its rawest form. Except for being mono, the material could easily be mistaken for more recent Hooker material. No blues fan should be without this CD in his/her collection.

When John Lee Hooker met with The Groundhogs it was blues magic. When he traveled to England, he enjoyed playing live with the Hogs as his back up band. Originally, the father of the British blues John Mayall had the job sewn up, until Eric Clapton quit his band and then plans changed. Much to the delight of guitarist Tony McPhee, the Hogs were in. Hooker was so pleased with the Hogs and their efforts that he decided to go into the studio in 1965 to cut an album with them. This is a paring comparable to the Hooker and Canned Heat sessions that took place many years later. It was the intention of Hooker and the Hogs to have only these genuine versions found on this CD released. Four bonus tracks from the John Lee vaults are part of this collection as well to make this an even more enticing purchase for blues enthusiasts.
