Mats/Morgan Band (formerly Hot Rats and Zappsteetoot) is a band that features Morgan Ågren and Mats Öberg. Morgan is a drummer and composer and Mats is a keyboard player and composer. The band is a showcase for their virtuosic skills on their respective instruments as well as their compositional skills. Their music is difficult to categorize, containing elements of jazz, electronic music, waltz, dance music, avant garde/free jazz, techno, rock, progressive and modern classical music.

While Morgan is certainly capable of dynamic contrast, he often displays it on this album; it is his assault and batteries that make me shake my head in disbelief. The key players are awesome (the album has 2 others besides Mats) but lend to the albums one big drawback in that it maybe just a touch to keyboard heavy. This, unfortunately, despite the quality and variation in playing, tends to cause a slightly redundant feel to the album. Another element that prevents masterpiece status is the notable absence of Mats' Stevie Wonderesque vocals and flavorful harmonica playing

The 76-plus-minute album journeys through alternately straightforward and impossibly skewed rhythms, ever-changing keyboard voicings, and melodies and themes sometimes drawing from Zappa's gigantic influence but with a unique Mats/Morgan avant prog/fusion spin. When Öberg and Ågren hit the stage with bassist Tommy Tordsson, keyboardists Robert Elovsson and Eric Carlsson, and Morgan's brother Jimmy on fiery guitar, they were well prepared to wow the friendly crowd, and the home listener will be wowed as well. The band doesn't waste any time getting started.
