The idea for GREGORIAN came about when the Hamburg music producer Frank Peterson visited the royal monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial in Spain in 1989. Walking through the medieval monastery and chateau listening to current music on his walkman, he found the inspiration for the sound experiment of mixing the ancient Gregorian music with modern light music. Peterson realized the idea for the first time with Michael Cretu with the worldwide sound phenomenon Enigma. The first album MCMXC . appeared in 1990 and became a worldwide success after only a short time.

Having released 16 albums in 15 years, being awarded Gold and Platinum in 18 countries and having performed over 1,000 shows in front of over 2 million people in 32 countries, Gregorian are besides Scorpions, Rammstein and Kraftwerk - one of the most successful German artist abroad. The sound of Gregorian reflects various influences of its mastermind, successful producer Frank Peterson (the man behind Gregorian, Enigma and multi-million seller artist Sarah Brightman) who has a magic touch when it comes to choosing songs.

Each Gregorian album is initially digitally tracked at Nemo Studios, Peterson's Hamburg studio The concept proved to be successful, and the group proceeded to record several more Masters of Chant albums in the same style.
