Poème, Op. 25, is a work for violin and orchestra written by Ernest Chausson in 1896. It is a staple of the violinist's repertoire, has very often been recorded and performed, and is generally considered Chausson's best-known and most-loved composition. Poème was written in response to a request from Eugène Ysaÿe for a violin concerto. Chausson felt unequal to the task of a concerto, writing to Ysaÿe: I hardly know where to begin with a concerto, which is a huge undertaking, the devil's own task

He was born in Paris into an upper middle-class family. He frequented the Paris salons, where he met such celebrities as Fantin-Latour, Odilon Redon, and Vincent d'Indy. He dabbled in writing and drawing before definitely deciding on his career. He completed his law studies and became a lawyer at the court of appeals, but never completed his practical stage
Fellow composer Vincent d'Indy completed the third movement and it is for this reason it seems appropriate for the Chilingirian Quartet to have paired Chausson's quartet with one of d'Indy's own efforts in the genre on this recording. D'Indy, a pupil of Cesar Franck's pupils, completed three string quartets and (like Chausson) left one incomplete upon his death. Chausson: String Quartet O. 5; d'Indy: String Quartet N. is a 1999 Hyperion Records recording featuring the Chilingirian Quartet as they play Ernest Chausson and Vincent D'Indy. Roger Nichols has written the Music notes. Splendid performance by the Chilingirian Quartet.
