Society's Child", or "Baby I've Been Thinking", was a song written, composed, and recorded in 1965 by Janis Ian. Its lyrics were centered on the then-taboo subject of interracial romance.

Lyrics to "Society's Child" song by Janis Ian: Come to my door, baby Face is clean and shining black as night My mama went to answer You know that. Come to my door, baby Face is clean and shining black as night My mama went to answer You know that you looked so fine Now I could understand the tears and the shame She called you "Boy", instead of your name When she wouldn't let you inside When she turned and said "But honey, he's not our kind". She says I can't see you any more, baby Can't see you any more. Walk me down to school, baby Everybody's acting deaf and blind Until they turn and say "Why don't you stick to your own kind?" My teachers all.

This full-length debut from British blues-rockers Spooky Tooth has a tone similar to Traffic with its psychedelic take on the influential pop and soul music of the '60s. A few cover tunes including Janis Ian's "Society's Child" and the Nashville Teens' "Tobacco Road" are included, but original songs like the soulful ballad "It Hurts You So" and "Bubbles" (with its Beach Boys sensibility) are the real standouts. Janis Ian is songwriter, performer, and author with 9 Grammy Nominations. Her songs "At 17" and "Society's Child" are in the Grammy Hall Of Fame. I would tell her how I've yearned to be worthy of the grail. All these years and all I've learned is just how brilliantly I fail. There are voices on the wind. Stolen whispers, sacred moans. I lay the baby out each dawn, inbetween the tender corn, with sunrise for her bonnet, and flies her only blanket. Somewhere out there are millions just like me - homesick for Eden, heartsick at the memory. You mistake the moment for the song.
