Funki Porcini is composer and film maker James Braddell (. a Giacomo Braddellini). His swirling mixtures of downtempo breaks, smooth ambiance, and disjointed drum'n'bass helped put the London-based Ninja Tune label on the map. His latest album is "STUDIO 59" (June 2019, self-release). Funki Porcini began making music in San Francisco when he moved into The Residents' old warehouse.

One of the earliest in Ninja Tune's stable of ambient breakbeat acts, James Bradell's Funki Porcini project slowed considerably during the 2000s, and he admits as much in the liner notes to 2010's On: "Obviously with the freeness of music it became dubious if it would support a family, and as a result I have had to resort to. more practical and sordid ways of making a living. Consequently, On is a collection of recordings from the 2000s that Bradell had worked on only fitfully, but his deft touch is still intact.

I have experimented with augmenting recorded sound with electronic instruments to give atmosphere to commonplace situations, and originally the record was to be entitled Augmented Aurality. However due to the appalling lurch towards fascism that is taking place in the western world I thought it more appropriate to call the album Conservative Apocalypse after the eighth track.

Funki Porcini is the stage name of English musician and film maker James Braddell. The name "Funki Porcini" is a twist on "Funghi Porcini", the Italian name of the mushroom Boletus edulis, commonly known as "penny bun". He spent ten years in Italy making music for film and television. Thereafter, he returned to England. In 1994 he signed to independent record label Ninja Tune and set up his own studio, The Uterus Goldmine.
