Their debut album From Nothing Comes Everything brings all of their raw, untamed fury directly into your ear canals, threatening to rend them asunder. Opener (and longest track) ‘From This Time’ begins with some subtle, reserved strumming that is inevitably the calm before the storm. In a haze of feedback the quartet kick into a truly colossal, lumbering riff. Surrender To The Light’ showcases another of Torpor’s key strengths, and something that is integral to a decent sludge sound: the rhythm section. Lauren Masons’ bass permeates absolutely everything, a low, rumbling and filthy tone that nails everything together, while Simon Mason drives things along with his purposeful drumming. He’s never overtly flashy behind the kit, but his restraint speaks volumes, he breaks free precisely when he needs to and his subtle cymbal work is top notch.

Nothing comes from nothing (Latin: ex nihilo nihil fit) is a philosophical expression of a thesis first argued by Parmenides. It is associated with ancient Greek cosmology, such as is presented not just in the works of Homer and Hesiod, but also in virtually every internal system-there is no break in-between a world that did not exist and one that did, since it could not be created ex nihilo in the first place.
