The Dorsey Brothers were an American studio jazz band, led by Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. They started recording in 1928 for OKeh Records. The Dorsey Brothers recorded songs for the dime store labels (Banner, Cameo, Domino, Jewel, Oriole, Perfect). A handful of sides during their Brunswick period were issued by Vocalion. They signed to Decca in 1934, formed a more traditional band, and performed live until a falling out in May 1935

It's astonishing, given the burgeoning interest in swing music, that it took until late 1999 for anyone to assemble an anthology of work by the original Dorsey Brothers band. Until then, they were represented solely by 16 of their Brunswick studio sides on Columbia's Best of the Big Bands, which predated their days as an actual performing band. The first seven cuts here come from the OKeh and Brunswick sides, and only two of them, the Brunswick tracks ("Mood Hollywood" and "Old Man Harlem," appear on Columbia's CD - the rest are earlier OKeh recordings from.

The Dorsey Brothers consisted of a studio group fronted by musicians Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey. They started recording under their name in 1928 with a series of studio recordings for the OKeh label (they had come to New York in the mid-1920s and were among the most sought-after musicians). Always just a studio group, members (during the 1928-1934 period) included nearly all of the great white jazz musicians playing around New York.
