LES BAXTER is a jazz related soundtracks exotica music artist. Les Baxter is a pianist who composed and arranged for the top swing bands of the '40s and '50s, but he is better known as the founder of exotica, a variation of easy listening that glorified the sounds and styles of Polynesia, Africa, and South America, even as it retained the traditional string-and-horn arrangements of instrumental pop.

Leslie Thompson Baxter (March 14, 1922 – January 15, 1996) was an American musician and composer. After working as an arranger and composer for swing bands, he developed his own style of easy listening music, known as exotica. Baxter studied piano at the Detroit Conservatory before moving to Los Angeles for further studies at Pepperdine College.

Single by Les Baxter Chorus and Orchestra with Will Holt. However, the song clearly bears a close resemblance, in both melody and lyrics, to "On the Judgement Day", which was recorded by gospel group The Sensational Nightingales in 1954 and released the following year on the Peacock label. Tosh recorded the song again as "Downpresser Man" for his 1977 solo album Equal Rights and released a live recording of the song in a medley with "Equal Rights" on his 1983 album Captured Live.

Pop. Easy Listening. The Exotic Moods Of Les Baxter. Since I loved "Ritual of the Savage" and the Les Baxter selections on the Ultralounge compilation "Mondo Exotica," I bought this large compilation of his exotica, but I am very disappointed in the sound quality compared to the sound quality of those two albums. In my opinion, good sound quality, especially good stereo imaging, is really necessary for getting the full effect of Les Baxter's, as well as most other composer's, exotica, which were created to show off the then new capabilities of high fidelity stereo systems. 3 people found this helpful.
