Cal" (1984), Pat O'Connor's film adaptation of Bernard MacLaverty's 1983 novel, introduced many American viewers to the tragic intricacies of the Northern Ireland conflict. MacLaverty crafted the screen adaptation of his economically written novel of love, death and destiny amidst the Troubles, and O'Connor's brisk, spare direction captures the stark and minimalist feel of MacLaverty's novel. Mark Freuder Knopfler OBE (/ˈnɒpflər/ NOP-flər; born 12 August 1949) is a British singer-songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and film score composer. He was the lead guitarist, lead singer, and songwriter for the rock band Dire Straits, which he co-founded with his younger brother, David Knopfler, in 1977. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland and raised near Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
