The Auburn system (also known as the New York or Congregate System) is a penal method of the 19th century in which persons worked during the day in groups and were kept in solitary confinement at night, with enforced silence at all times. The silent system evolved during the 1820s at Auburn Prison in Auburn, New York, as an alternative to and modification of the Pennsylvania system of solitary confinement, which it gradually replaced in the United States.

The Auburn system, named after the Auburn prison in New York, was a variation on the Quaker-run Pennsylvania penitentiaries of the 19th century. Combining hard labor with solitary confinement, the prison system sought to rehabilitate criminals while using them to offset the expenses of running a jail. While many of the brutal disciplinary practices used in the Auburn system have been replaced, its foundations remain the model for many prisons throughout the world.

The Auburn system was the first prison that had its inmates work in association during the day for maximum production. Also, this type of system became the model for prisons in the entire country, with the exception of the Eastern Penitentiary of Pennsylvania. That system maintained its practice of complete separation of inmates at all times. The arguments made by the proponents of the Auburn system of corrections can neither be refuted nor claimed by the supporters of the Pennsylvania system. The origin of many prisons today and many of their practices governing the control of inmates can be traced back to the Auburn system. It is important to note, despite the ongoing controversy, both systems were far better than earlier versions. Perfection will never be achieved in this area of the criminal justice system. In my opinion, it is just not possible.
