Scum is the debut studio album by English grindcore band Napalm Death. It was released on 1 July 1987 through Earache Records. Side A of Scum was originally recorded for £5. 0 at Rich Bitch studio (Birmingham, England) in August 1986. It was intended to form part of a split release with English crossover thrash band Atavistic on Manic Ears (Bristol, England). After an extensive line-up change, the second half of Scum was recorded in May 1987 at Rich Bitch studio

Napalm Death are a refined powerhouse of foundation-cracking grind, but this wasn't always the case. The band, which hasn't featured any original members since track 13 of their Scum debut, formed in the West Midlands in England back in 1981, initially influenced by anarcho-punk. In 1990, Napalm Death, featuring erstwhile Benediction vocalist Barney Greenway and guitarist Jesse Pintado (who would remain with the group until 2004), got in on the Florida action, heading to Morrisound Studios, which was the studio for extreme metal bands. The resulting album, Harmony Corruption found the band expanding their style, one which would go on to define their sound far more than the first pair of records. Napalm did this with mixed results, resurrecting their grinding ethos in stride with the dawn of the new millennium and it's in this modern era where they've (mostly) thrived on consistency.

For years Napalm Death opened each new album with an intro, and Smear Campaign follows that tradition. The previous ones were generally a nice way to get things going and build up the listener to the level of intensity that he or she needed to be at before all hell broke loose and the first song started. The album is a culmination of a quarter of a century worth of development and innovation. Fans of any era of Napalm Death will be able to identify with this album and the political message is as strong and in your face as ever.
