Philip Glass: Partitas for Solo Cello. Cellist Haimovitz plays two partitas for unaccompanied cello, Songs and Poems, from 2007, and Partita No. 2 (2010), for which this is the premiere recording. Haimovitz is a fine cellist but the recording did little for me. Nor is it a case of being unwilling to accept anything short of Bach’s six glorious suites. I love Truls Mork’s playing the Britten unaccompanied cello suites and I have Wendy Sutter’s 2008 Songs and Poems for Solo Cello, all compositions by Glass, which I love. But while there are good moments.

Then on June 22, Glass will perform with Matt Haimovitz at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA in a special concert presenting the world premiere of Partita N. for Solo Cello. While Bach’s influence may not be immediately apparent in early Glass, it can be heard in more recent works such as the sets of Partitas for solo violin and cello. The catalyst was singer-songwriter and poet Leonard Cohen, with whom Glass worked on the song-cycle Book of Longing in 2006 (from which ‘The Paris Sky’, included here, is taken).

The cello is the most human of stringed instruments. Its span encompasses both male and female ranges, from basso profundo to coloratura soprano; grasped between the knees, it is not so much possessed by the player as embraced, its shrieks and rumbles absorbed fully by the body. A similar mood pervades Glass’s Partita No. 2 for Solo Cello (2010), which has just been recorded by the cellist Matt Haimovitz, on the album Philip Glass: Partitas for Solo Cello, for Orange Mountain Music, Glass’s personal label. Glass’s love for the cello goes back to the days of his youth, when he worked in his father’s record store and began listening to Bach’s Suites for Solo Cello.
