Hall first came to be known to the public at large when she joined the second Brasil project of Bossa Nova master Sergio Mendes, Brasil '66. Unlike the previous incarnation, Brasil '66 was an instant success - making a significant impact on the charts with its first single, a version of the Brazilian song "Mais Que Nada". Much of the song's appeal was due to the distinctive, multi-tracked vocals of Hall.

Alpert’s wife, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Lani Hall, started her singing career in 1966 as the lead singer of Sergio Mendes’s breakthrough group Brasil ’66. She left her Chicago roots behind and spent five years performing with the band around the world. Hall began writing on the road, expressing her personal impressions of the world on the page. Soon, Sergio Mendes was asking her to write English lyrics for many of the band’s Brazilian songs. In 1966, A&M Records signed Brasil ’66 and Hall met Alpert. Sparks flew and they married in 1973. Hall has recorded more than 22 albums. Her album Es Facil Amar won a Grammy Award in 1986 for Best Latin Pop Performance, and she picked up a second Grammy in 2013 as producer on Alpert’s Steppin’ Out. Time and place.
