Teresa Berganza Vargas OAXS (born on 16 March 1933) is a Spanish mezzo-soprano. She is most closely associated with the roles of Rossini, Mozart, and Bizet. She is admired for her technical virtuosity, musical intelligence, and beguiling stage presence. Teresa Berganza was born in Madrid. She studied piano and voice at the Madrid Conservatory, where she was awarded first prize for singing in 1954. She made her concert debut in Madrid in 1955.

The Spanish opera singer Teresa Berganza (born 16 March 1933) is one of the foremost mezzo-sopranos of the third quarter of the 20th century. She is admired for her technical virtuosity, musical intelligence and beguiling stage presence. Her concert repertoire includes Spanish, French, German, and Russian songs. From 1957 to 1977 Berganza was married to the composer and pianist Félix Lavilla, with whom she recorded and performed regularly and with whom she has three children, soprano Cecilia Lavilla Berganza among them. In 1992, Berganza participated in the opening ceremonies of Expo '92 in Seville and the opening ceremonies of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

Berganza's staple operatic roles, such as Rossini's Rosina and Mozart's Cherubino, form the core of the first disc, which also includes arias by Gluck, Handel, and Bizet. Berganza's defining vocal traits are on display: the sweetness of her tone, the elegance of her phrasing, and her unflappable composure in even the most difficult music. The two arias from Handel's Alcina are a nice touch, since, though known mostly for her Mozart and Rossini, Berganza was an accomplished performer of Baroque opera.

The following footage presents Spanish popular songs, arranged by different composers of the 20th century, recorded in 1965 during the Festival of Aix-en-Provence, during which Berganza was accompanied by her husband, Felix Lavilla. We then return to Mozart with an aria from La Clemenza di Tito recorded in 1967 for French television with the ORTF Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Serge Baudo. To close the episode, Berganza performs Seven Spanish popular songs by Manuel de Falla, at the BBC studios in 1960, accompanied by Gerald Moore at the piano.

From 1957 to 1977, Berganza was married to the composer and pianist Félix Lavilla, with whom she recorded and performed regularly and with whom she has three children, including soprano Cecilia Lavilla Berganza. During the 1980s, Teresa herself wasfound to have been admired by Arthur Richard Jackson, the Scottish drifter who attempted to murder American actress Theresa Saldana in 1982.
