Ever since guitarist John McLaughlin formed the 4th Dimension-his first electric fusion band in a decade-fans have been hoping he'd dig a little further into his back catalog. The wait is over with The Boston Record, a live album recorded in 2013 at Boston's Berklee College of Music. This isn't 4th Dimension's first live album, though it is the first to feature the seven year-old group's current configuration

The first-ever full-length John McLaughlin concert is being released on DVD today (we know, hard to believe!) John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, Live at Belgrade was filmed live last summer (2008) and features John McLaughlin along with Dominique di Piazza on bass, Gary Husband on keyboards and jungle kit, and Mark Mondesir on drums  . Live At Belgrade Track List: Senor .

John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension. Hearing such standards alongside recent compositions like 'El Hombre Que Sabia' and the moving 'Gaza City' serves to demonstrate the breadth and scope of McLaughlin's vision, honed over a career now spanning fifty years

In the liner notes for To the One, guitarist John McLaughlin writes a brief essay about the profound inspiration John Coltrane's A Love Supreme had on him musically and spiritually. In the Mahavishnu Orchestra, that debt was obvious; on Love Devotion Surrender, with Carlos Santana, the pair covered its title theme. McLaughlin even paid direct homage to the saxophonist on 1995’s After the Rain, which featured not only Coltrane’s material, but drummer Elvin Jones as well. With his group the 4th Dimension - Gary.

He’s backed by the 4th Dimension, a killer band featuring Gary Husband on keyboards and drums, bassist Etienne Mbappe, and drummer Ranjit Barot. The quartet stormed the Berklee Performance Center last June and kicked out the jams. Aside from being a terrific recording, the critical message the album delivers is simply this: John McLaughlin is still at the top of his game and touring his ass off. If you have never seen him live, you should make that happen, because he’s one of the most important guitarists to ever walk the planet. This article originally appeared in VG‘s July ’14 issue.

McLaughlin's solo on "Miles Beyond" from his album Live at Ronnie Scott's won the 2018 Grammy Award for the Best Improvised Jazz Solo. He has been awarded multiple "Guitarist of the Year" and "Best Jazz Guitarist" awards from magazines such as DownBeat and Guitar Player based on reader polls. Left to right: Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucía performing in Barcelona, Spain in the 1980s. That summer, he began touring with a new jazz fusion quartet, the 4th Dimension, consisting of keyboardist/drummer Gary Husband, bassist Hadrian Feraud, and drummer Mark Mondesir.
