Scott Fagan made his way to New York City when he was just shy of 20, finding a place in a Greenwich Village still processing the aftershocks of Bob Dylan and the Beatles. All of this provides plenty of legend for South Atlantic Blues but, fortunately, the album is strong enough to warrant a fair amount of this retrospective praise.

His consolation prize wasn't bad: he recorded the full-length South Atlantic Blues for Atco in 1968. Upon its release, South Atlantic Blues essentially disappeared but Jasper Johns happened upon the LP and loved it so much he created three pieces called Scott Fagan Record, which eventually found their way into the collections of the Met, MOMA, and the Walker Art Center, and that wasn't Fagan's only connection to high art: decades later, he discovered he was the. biological father of Stephin Merritt, the singer/songwriter behind the Magnetic Fields

★ ★ ★ ☆ Lost treasures from rock’s past keep popping up, but Scott Fagan’s 1968 album South Atlantic Blues is not so much an obscure curio as an easy-listening classic that slipped through the cracks. In 1964 Fagan left hard times on the Virgin Islands to seek his fortune in New York, where he hooked up with the songwriter Doc Pomus. Greatness beckoned, with Fagan’s overwrought, vibrato-heavy voice recalling that of Neil Diamond and his lyrics filled with exquisite misery. Lover, look at me. I’m crying! he pleads on Crying. The album has that gentle but expansive studio sound so redolent.

Scott Fagan’s debut album, ‘South Atlantic Blues,’ is a genuine lost classic - a mystical, mythical and deeply soulful masterpiece. That familial connection with music would come full circle when Fagan discovered he was the biological father of songwriter Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields. They did not meet until the premiere of a documentary about Doc Pomus in 2013.

Album: South Atlantic Blues (Bonus Tracks Version), 2015.
