Won't Be Pathetic Forever. The Wonder Years - Dude, What Is A Land Pirate?

Throughout the years, The Wonder Years have built a considerable following on the grounds of their unique lyricism, powerful message and cathartic live show. Formed in 2005 as a joke band from the ashes of a high school band called The Premier, The Wonder Years built up a local following on the back of their debut album, which Campbell describes as just bad, I mean really bad, I don’t even want to talk about it. However, 2008’s Won’t Be Pathetic Forever EP saw the band start to take itself seriously - with Campbell’s troubles with depression surfacing in his lyrics. What followed was 2010’s. After a two-year break, the band returned with No Closer To Heaven, an album which found its genesis in writer’s block.

Still, the Wonder Years' maturation from suburban pop punk ennui to (literal) world-weary emo desperation feels like a logical progression, and it's hard to fault them for tackling bigger subjects. For the most part, The Wonder Years on this album give us more of the same of what's made them such a mainstay of current Emo and Pop Punk for years. I wouldn't say this is as urgent and genre shifting as "No Closer To Heaven", and more often than not The Wonder Years are a little too far in their comfort zone. But the passionate performances, nostalgic lyrics, and solid production are all back in spades. Not to mention, it does seem like Wonder Years are further from the Pop Punk.

As Stevie Wonder turns 67 today, we throw a spotlight on some wonderful facts about the man and his legendary music. Author: Laurie Ulster. In the early 70s, The Rolling Stones went out on tour to promote their album Exile on Main Street, and booked Stevie Wonder as their opening act. He was about to release Talking Book, which featured the now legendary tracks Superstition and You Are The Sunshine Of My Life, and seized the opportunity to reach an even wider audience. It took 15 years to make King's birthday a national holiday, and for three years, Wonder put his career on hold to lead rallies in the cause. President Jimmy Carter endorsed the bill, but couldn't get support from Congress. It was Ronald Reagan who finally signed it into law, although it took three more years until it was first observed, and another 11 before all 50 states would make it official.

The Wonder Years are a six-piece pop punk band from Lansdale, PA, formed in 2005. In my opinion, they're the most essential pop punk band from the 2000s. Not only are they catchy and fun as fuck on recordings and in concert, but their lyrics are so personal and powerful that it's tear-jerking on occasion. Rather than uploading the plethora of EPs and splits these guys have done, I'm just going to upload their compilation album Sleeping On Trash, which has all of their recordings from 2005 to 2010 (except for GSOI!) Get Stoked On It! (2007).
