Hanns Eisler was born in Leipzig on 6 July 1898 and went to school in Vienna Arnold Schoenberg in 1919, dedicating his Sonata for Piano o. In Hollywood komponierte Eisler neben der Musik zu acht Hollywoodfilmen auch sein Hollywooder Liederbuch auf Texte von Brecht, Hölderlin und anderen. 1948 kehrte Eisler nach Europa zurück, zunächst nach Wien und Prag, schließlich nach Ost-Berlin. Obwohl er auf einen Text von Johannes R. Becher die Nationalhymne der DDR in Noten setzte, geriet er mit der DDR-Kulturbürokratie in Konflikt, als er Ende 1952 seinen Operntext Johann Faustus veröffentlichte.

The Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler (Hanns Eisler College or Academy of Music) in Berlin, Germany, is one of the leading music conservatories in Europe. It was established in East Berlin in 1950 as the Deutsche Hochschule für Musik (German College of Music) because the older Hochschule für Musik Berlin (now the Berlin University of the Arts) was in West Berlin. After the death of one of its first professors, composer Hanns Eisler, the school was renamed in his honor in 1964
