The phrase next year in Jerusalem, however, can be interpreted in many different ways. These words convey a web of meaning from concrete to abstract, and from earthly to holy. Although the phrase itself entered the Haggadah only in the Middle Ages, it resonates thematically with ancient biblical themes of past and future redemption. The first challenge is Jerusalem itself–is it a place we want to be, this year or next? Best Answer: "Next Year in Jerusalem" is an expression of spiritual hope - that Jerusalem be rebuilt spiritually, as the spiritual center of the world, with the Holy Temple and the manifest Presence of G-d on earth, at its center. But that is tied to geography and the physical presence of Jews in the flourishing modern city of Jerusalem. The latter is essential for the former. We should be truly grateful for the rebuilding of our holy city and understand that the renewal of Jewish life and sovereignty in Israel is part of the process of ultimate redemption.

Traditionally, saying next year in Jerusalem was just a wish for Jews - because there was no such thing as a Jewish Jerusalem or a Jewish state. So the Seder closed with the wish for all Jews to be able to return to the homeland, just as they did after leaving Egypt. Since the creation of Israel, however, the meaning of the phrase has changed - any Jew who says next year in Jerusalem can actually travel to Jerusalem for Passover next year
