Riley Puckett & Clayton McMichen, Slim Ga.

Clayton McMichen (January 26, 1900 – January 4, 1970) was an American fiddler and country musician. Born in Allatoona, Georgia, McMichen learned to play the fiddle from his father and uncle. He moved to Atlanta with his family in 1913, working as an automobile mechanic. While there, he entered and won several competitions for fiddle. In 1918, he formed the band Lick the Skillet, which soon was renamed to the Home Town Boys.

I see that the Georgia Wildcats were founded by Clayton McMichen, the fiddler with Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers. I found a notice of a recording of the group (but no mention of your cousin): CLAYTON MCMICHEN . During the late '20s, McMichen had few peers as a breakdown fiddler; he was the driving force and de facto leader of Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers

This album was issued in 1992 as part of the Newport Folk Festival Classics set of albums that compiled and documented the highly influential festival that ran from 1959 into the sixties. The festivals coincided with, and were part of, the US folk music boom and were instrumental in introducing many examples of traditional and roots music to a new generation. Clayton McMichen was another older generation fiddle player whose musical activity dates back to the twenties and thirties when his group The Georgia Wildcats included a young Merle Travis on guitar. The penultimate act is The New York City Ramblers whose ranks included the young David Grisman on mandolin. They play David's composition ‘Cedar Hill’ alongside three others that include a Bill Monroe song. Monroe himself with his Bluegrass Boys is the final act here with five tracks to delight the crowd.

McMichen's band, the Georgia Wildcats, was one of the most eclectic groups of the 1930s. Formed as a string band, they switched to Dixieland jazz in the mid '40s. From 1945 until 1955, the group was featured daily on the Louisville radio station, WAVE. McMichen and the Georgia Wildcats also appeared on their own television show in the early '50s. A native of Allatoona, GA, McMichen learned to play fiddle as a youngster. By his early twenties, he had mastered the instrument. After moving to Atlanta, he won the first of numerous fiddle championships
