Texas in July was an American metalcore band from Ephrata, Pennsylvania, formed in 2007. They released an EP, Salt of the Earth, and their debut full-length album, I Am, through CI Records. After signing with Equal Vision Records, they released three more studio albums: One Reality on April 26, 2011; a self-titled album on October 9, 2012; and finally Bloodwork on September 16, 2014. The band broke up at the end of 2015

Texas In July's self-titled third album practically boils over with uncompromising metalcore fury. On tracks like "Shallow Point," the Pennsylvania group ricochet between breakneck verses and slow-grinding, d choruses, never losing their momentum for even a second. The band incorporate other sounds into their attack as well, such as on the whiplash-inducing "Without a Head," which veers into chugging thrash-metal territory, or "Paranoia," which boasts the kind of frenzied fret-tapping endemic to '80s heavy metal

They're from the same Eastern Pennsylvania area as their brothers in metal, August Burns Red, but Texas in July deserve their moniker since they're just about as brutal and hot as a Lone Star summer - at least here, on their self-titled third album. The eponymous title perhaps signifies a rebirth, as tracks like "Cry Wolf" and "Bed of Nails" all shout like they mean it, and now mix with some post-hardcore, post-rock, and post-Godspeed You!

From the start of the album, I would have to compare the quality of the sound to that of their last album, " One Reality " - the guitars and drums are well mixed, and typical of metal albums these days, the bass is mostly mixed out, which is a shame, considering Ben Witkowski writes almost all of their songs. In any case, the sound is tight, and well produced. For the actual songs, a few stand out in my mind.

With this album, Texas in July has come into their own and are forging ahead in their specialty. While I Am focused mainly on straight "chugging" and heavy breakdowns, One Reality moves towards a more melodic and - dare I say relaxing? - sound. Their guitars are still as intricate as ever, but instead of drowning out everything with heavy staccato riffs, the second guitar opts for melodic chords. Overall, this album is a solid entry, and while TIJ has been very near and dear to my heart for a while now and so I may be biased because of it, I feel that other people can also appreciate the musicianship this young group of guys has brought to the table.
