Mendelssohn’s Piano Trios of 1839 and 1845 are, along with the piano trios of Beethoven and Schubert, pinnacles of the genre in the nineteenth century. Robert Schumann saw in them a reconciliation of contradictions which left a lasting impression on musical history at the time: the conflicts between lyrical and dramatic form, between intimacy and virtuoso performance, and finally between a universal comprehensibility and subjectivisation.
Mendelssohn: Piano Trios. A world premiere: the Van Baerle Trio take on both of Mendelssohn's piano trios. The bonus inclusion of the early version of the first trio alongside its more familiar final form shows how the work evolved. What is striking is not only how fruitful and significant the composer's revisions were, but equally how much pleasure this young trio takes in experimentation. A transparent, melodically unfettered and thoroughly stormy interpretation which tells a story. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.
Arrangement: piano trio (PF TRIO). Published by Henle Verlag. Composer: Mendelssohn. After an early work and a discontinued attempt in 1831/32 Mendelssohn made his breakthrough in this important chamber music genre in the summer of 1839 with the Piano Trio in d minor op. 49, which was to be followed six years later by the Trio in c minor op. 66. On publication of the first trio, Schumann took the opportunity to describe the composer as the Mozart of the 19th century, whereby he was obviously alluding to the mixture of Classical and Romantic stylistic elements. The musical text of these two famous trios has been thoroughly revised to reflect the latest scholarly findings
