While the Joe Harriott-John Mayer Double Quintet certainly did not invent the mixing of jazz andIndian music (Ravi Shankar and Bud Shank were doing it in 1961), they were the very first group to use the term fusion in identifying their sound (don’t blame the. hey only gave the genre its F-word name, not its derogatory connotation).

Joe Harriott's music goes virtually unheard today, yet the alto saxophonist exerted a powerful influence on early free jazz in England. In London, Harriott worked freelance and in the band of trumpeter Pete Pitterson. In 1954, he landed an important gig. The album's traditional jazz quintet instrumentation was augmented by a violin, sitar, tambura, and tabla. Harriott's recorded output was scarce and virtually none of it remains in print.

Jazz and classical fusions such as Third Stream had been around since the '50s, and sounds of jazz-rock fusion were emanating from various clubs and recordings on both sides of the Atlantic by the mid- to late '60s. But Indo-Jazz Fusions' merging of Indian music and jazz was unique
