Music for Tourists is an indie pop album by Chris Garneau. It was released in the year of 2007 on January 23 on the Absolutely Kosher record label. After playing in Brooklyn for some time, Garneau was recommended to record company Absolutely Kosher by Jamie Stewart, whose band Xiu Xiu was on that label. According to Garneau the album took around two years to record before it was released, as producer Duncan Sheik was very busy and there was a lot of downtime during recording.

I had to turn Chris Garneau’s Music for Tourists up awfully loud just to get myself to pay attention to it. Trouble was, I then had Music for Tourists turned up awfully loud, and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. Without trying to get into an argument about gender roles, Garneau isn’t exactly writing music for steadfastly hetero dude. nd I’m not even particularly straight. To explain: Garneau winds his way through Music for Tourists’ thirteen songs in an androgynous half-whisper, half-sob. I don’t like Damien Rice, so I’ll skip comparing him to Garneau, but I’d like to compare Music for Tourists to another record steeped in sadness: Eels’ 1998 album Electro-Shock Blues, released after a tremendous amount of personal tragedy befell band leader E. Based on subject matter alone, Electro-Shock Blues could easily have mirrored the plodding melodrama of. Music for Tourists, but it didn’t.

The album closes with what else but a cover of arguably one of indie rock's greatest songwriters, (arguably" haha, who else could it be") Elliott Smith. Though the track is "Between the Bars," one of Smith's more popular tunes, Garneau bleeds it forth with as much feeling as is possible for anyone other than Elliott. The piano is again employed for this final waltz with Chris and the listener is left lying on the floor with his eyes closed and his stomach churning with the force of a thousand swarms of butterflies being crushed by an incredibly strong wind.
