A split album (or split) is a music album which includes tracks by two or more separate artists. There have been singles and EPs of the same variety, which are often called "split singles" and "split EPs" respectively. Split albums differ from "various artists" compilation albums in that they generally include several tracks of each artist, or few artists with one or two tracks each, instead of multiple artists with only one or two tracks each.

Stoner metal legends Sleep are back with a new album, and it’s out today, Friday, April 20 (aka 4/20). The Sciences marks their first LP since Dopesmoker, their seminal release which first saw the light in 1998 and has since been released in a number of different incarnations. It was most recently reissued by Southern Lord in 2012. The new LP features song titles such as Marijuanaut’s Theme and Giza Butler. The album is out via Jack White’s Third Man Records In 2014, Sleep released The Clarity, their first new song since Dopesmoker.

Split sleep schedules have recently begun to emerge as a potential alternative to continuous night shift work. Working at night has the combined problems of prolonged wakefulness (often working 8 to 12-hour shifts) and circadian misalignment (working at a time of night when you would normally be asleep). Split-shift schedules that maintain adequate sleep time per 24 hours may be beneficial for sleep, performance, and safety. A number of recent studies have found split sleep provides comparable benefits for performance to one big sleep, if the total sleep time per 24 hours was maintained (at around 7 to 8 hours total sleep time per 24 hours). However, as might be expected, performance and safety can still be impaired if wake up and start work times are in the early hours of the morning.
