Half-handed Cloud - As Stowaways in Cabinets of Surf, We Live​-​out in Our Members a Kind of Rebirth flac album

Half-handed Butt’s John Ringhofer recorded this album on his half-inch reel-to-reel tape machine in the sanctuary and custodial quarters of a church in Berkeley, California, where he’s lived and worked as a custodian for the past seven years. He played most of the parts himself, joined by friends on cello, clarinet, violin, trumpet, and flute. Brandon Buckner, one-third of Ringhofer’s former band, Wookieback, is behind the drum-kit for the duration of this record. While creating the Stowaways album - not stowaways as in secret, but stowaways as in hidden - Ringhofer was also repeatedly struck by texts in the Hebrew and New Testament scriptures that identify God with water: over water the Spirit moved in the creation story, through water the children of the exodus traveled, in water believers are baptized.

The difference is that Half-Handed Cloud have absolutely no patience for the standard tricks of the trade; they’re intentionally built to spill out triplets, pauses, and halting rhythms like a sludge tanker with a leak: nothing with even a resemblance to buildups or song sequences lasting more than 20 seconds. When I can make sense of what he’s saying, I hear re-tellings of classic Bible stories, but the words are delivered in such a fashion that I trust Ringhofer not to step over the line with the preaching stuff.

The full title of Stowaways, the new Half-Handed Cloud album, reads As Stowaways in Cabinets of Surf, We Live-out in Our Members a Kind of Rebirth. But though the working title seems to play out much longer than you'd expect, the record itself works in the opposite way. With a tracklist spanning 25 songs - many with titles as wordy as the album's official moniker - you might think this record is a massive musical tome
