Merton first-year undergraduate Theophilus Kwek has been awarded this year's Martin Starkie Prize by the Oxford Poetry Society. The prize, named after the actor, writer and director who founded the Society in 1946, is awarded annually to 'an emerging, noteworthy voice within the Oxford poetry community'. Theo was presented with the award last Tuesday (10 June), at a special evening in celebration of Oxford poetry. Theo says: "I’ve been dabbling in poetry for several years, since joining Singapore’s Creative Arts Programme as a student in Raffles Institution. A mere dropped breath, as if, into tall grass, the departure of a narrowing way. with little on the gentle hill to cast. incline or decline, a possible gauge. There in the room, our talk, scarcely nonplussed

The National Brass Ensemble is comprised of twenty-six of the finest brass players in major orchestras across the US. Gabrieli, featuring the NBE, includes 15 pieces from the Italian composer’s highly influential Sacrae Symphoniae. The playing was so inspiring, and the camaraderie and chemistry so fantastic, that a number of us realized then that this was the direction to follow for the Gabrieli project.

This collection of 20th century American compositions for brass ensemble features as its title track Charles Ives' eerie From the Steeples to the Mountains - a chamber piece that attempts to re-create the outdoor sound of church bells echoing in the mountains. Apart from the Ives pieces and Carl Ruggles' Angels, the music on this recording uses pleasant (if not always traditional) tonal systems.

The Power and the Glory is the sixth album by the British progressive rock group Gentle Giant, released in 1974. Contrary to popular belief, the title of the album and its many lyrical themes were not inspired by author Graham Greene's novel of the same name, although Derek Shulman was aware of Greene's novel. Guitarist Gary Green has cited this album as his favourite by the band.
