Just a Game is the third studio album by Canadian hard rock band Triumph, released in 1979. The album contains one of Triumph's most popular songs on FM album-oriented radio, "Lay it on the Line", and the Top 40 hit "Hold On", which peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at No. 33 in Canada. The vinyl LP version of the album featured a sleeve that folded open to reveal a board game (though later pressings just contained a regular vinyl sleeve without this.

Thankfully, 1979's Just a Game would see Triumph taking measures (albeit discreet ones) to establish a stronger personality of their own, by relinquishing some of those progressive tendencies in exchange for a generally bluesier, unquestionably rock-based songwriting approach that eventually defined them as slightly heavier foils to their famed countrymen. Another in-house production overseen by bassist, keyboard player, and all-around peacekeeper Mike Levine, Just a Game once again balanced an equal number of compositions from dual lead singers and songwriting forces Rik Emmett (guitar).

Just A Game is possibly Triumph's least interesting album. While most of their albums have at least one or two good songs or moments, Just A Game is a pure, straightforward Hard Rock/Blues Rock and Rock 'N' Roll album filled with generic and wholly unchallenging Rock numbers. The party rocker American Girls is lyrically so clichd and musically so utterly dull that I must press 'next'. However on their third album JUST A GAME, the comparisons to Rush had finally taken their toll so TRIUMPH streamlined their sound more into the hard rock camp but also found their niche with those catchy AOR power ballad hooks that found two of their most popular tracks of their career hitting the top 40 worldwide including the Billboard charts.

Listen to the songs from album Just a Game. And what better place to start cutting slack than album opener "Movin' On," whose chorus of brightly layered harmonies alluded to Chicago pomp rockers Styx, who were enjoying the peak of their popularity and influence at the time of this release.
