Since Serious Pilgrim, Martin has recorded 6 albums' worth of remarkably solid sonic material, but, on this particular night, he felt compelled to play a show that exclusively featured songs by Serious Pilgrim. A celebration, if I may. A deep listen to this recording clearly displays the through-line that connects Martin's solo material to these songs created far earlier in his life. To hear these compositions in such relatively quiet context in comparison to the maelstrom that was a Serious Pilgrim show in the 1990s feels as much like a complete re-introduction as it does a comfortable reacquaintance. I, for one, am thrilled that Martin performed the songs in so intimate a setting, permitting the nuances of melody and chordal progression stand as tall as they ever had occasion to.
