New wave in Yugoslavia was the new wave music scene of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. As its counterparts, the British and the US new wave, from which the main influences came, the Yugoslav scene was also closely related to punk rock, ska, reggae, 2 Tone, power pop and mod revival. Some of its acts are also counted as belonging to the Yugoslav punk scene which already existed prior to new wave.

October 18th and 19th, renowned Macedonian dancer and teacher, Atanas Kolarovski, will be in Seattle for 2 days of events - a dance workshop and party in his honor. Atanas recently celebrated his 87th birthday, help us make this a very special event for him, and show our appreciation for all he has done and his many accomplishments over the years. If you’ve attended Jana Rickel’s dance classes you’ll be well prepared for their set.

Atanas Kolarovski at the Spring Festival, March 19, 2006. Born in Drachevo (now in Macedonia), Atanas Kolarovski danced in amateur groups before being recruited into the Yugoslav Army Ensemble near the end of World War II, where he learned traditional songs and dance from all the Yugoslavian regions, including not just his own Macedonia but Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Serbia, and Montenegro. At Tanec he made his mark by choreographing such dances as Kalajdzisko Oro ("The Tinsmith's Dance") and Drachevka (named after his home village). Years of touring, performing, and teaching eventually brought Kolarovski and his family in 1973 to Seattle, where he ran a Balkan restaurant. In addition to teaching workshops, Kolarovski will speak during a cultural session at noon Sunday and will show archival dance videos.
