Profile: Slovak composer, born 25 September 1908 in Pezinok, Slovakia and died 5 August 1993 in Bratislava, Slovakia.
Eugen Suchoň was born in 1908 and died in 1993. He was a teacher, seminal musical theoretic and composer. His very important works: Baladická suita (Balladic Suite), Žalm zeme podkarpatskej (Psalm of Carpathian Land), Metamorfózy (Metamorphozis), opera Krútňava - the first Slovak opera, and cycle Obrázky zo Slovenska (Pictures of Slovakia). He was titled as National artist in 1958.
Slovak composer Eugen Suchon is perhaps best remembered in the west for his two operas, Krútnava (The Whirlpool), and Král' Svätopluk (King Svätopluk), which earned him an international reputation. Yet Suchon composed many orchestral pieces throughout his career, among them the three featured works on this 2015 album by Neeme Järvi and the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. Suchon's music in his early and middle periods offers a mix of modal themes, impressionistic harmonies, and lush, atmospheric orchestration, and the Metamorfózy shows a sophisticated mingling of these elements.
